About FBCR
The First Baptist Church was formed as a congregation on December 29, 1888,
under the leadership of S.K. Fusion. The first meeting place outside the
members' homes, was a room over the Cheney and Janders Drug Store on the
Northside of the square. The church rented the space for $2.50 per month.
In 1889, the Virginia and York Street lot was purchased and an old school
building was moved to the lot. During that first year, the church membership
rose from twelve to thirty-two. From 1891-1902, many improvements went into the
church building. These improvements included a new pulpit platform, new seats,
carpet, doors, windows, painting and some electrical work. In 1948, a new
church basement was constructed. With the addition of the new basement
classrooms, Sunday School attendance increased by 41%. The Baptist Youth
Fellowship was organized, and twenty-one new members were added to the church.
In December of 1959, a special dinner was held at the church for the
dedication of new church furnishings, but most importantly, to burn the old
mortgage which had been paid off. From 1959 to 1978, many reports were given of
spiritual and physical progress, and many members were added to the church. On
Palm Sunday of 1978, a ground breaking service was held for the new addition to
the church. This new addition included seven classrooms, a Pastor's office, men
and women's restrooms, steps going down to the basement, and three folding doors
between classrooms. Because of the remodeling, some classes had to meet outside
or in member's homes. The high school class met in the dentist office next
door. But this did not discourage the people; the new space being added
included new classes which allowed the church to reach many more souls.
From 1978 to the present, several improvements and upgrades have been made to
the interior and exterior of the church building.
The members of First Baptist Church have been and still are today, actively
involved in worship, fellowship and outreach to our community. The vision of
building bridges for eternity is to develop effective lives for God's glory. To
God be the glory for great things He has done!
